Welcome to the "How do I start" page
1. How do I start?
This part only needs to be done ONCE
- Start by clicking on LOG IN link. (up to your right)
Since you have not already created your account click on the User Preferences link.
It will ask you is for your your wiki name. A wiki name is two words put together that include a MINIMUM of two capital letters. There are NO SPACES in a wiki name. We suggest you put your first and last name together, starting them both with a capital letter. For exemple, PauloFreire. Your wiki name will be your way to log onto the site and the name of your personal wiki home page.
- Please choose a password you can easily recall. Yes, you can always change it later.
- Click on Create Profile when finished. (It should tell you -underneath the globe- that your account has been created.)
- Now click on LOG IN. This is what you will normally do when you arrive on the Wiki site. (Note that your personal computer can automatically do this for you if you so choose.)
- Once logged in your wiki name will appear on the top of the page.
The first time you click on your wiki name it will say that your page has not yet been created. There is nothing on it yet. Click on the link (near the end of the text) and your page will open in editing mode. You can put whatever you like on this page. For details see How to create your own personnal page.
2. Your personal wiki page
Remember, this is space is completely open to the public! Everything you put on this page will automtically go into a data back so you can search for certain words or concepts. You can search by the wiki title or the words in a text (the search option is at the top of all Wiki pages.) So, what to put on your personnal home page? Here are a few ideas people suggested at the conference:
- A bit about yourself : your interests, publications, research interests, creative ideas, etc.
- Upload your photo, any documents you wish, etc. (Click on the Attachment link above and follow the instructions.)
- Your course outlines
Documents you are working on (get some feedback -see the PleaseThankYou page)
- Work you would like to share
- Web links you think are important (Copy and paste the ENTIRE web address and it will automtically transform into a link)
Your friends wiki pages. (You simply type their wiki name. For example, I might want to put PauloFreire on my page.)
3. How to Edit a Page
You can ONLY edit a page (your own or others) if you are LOGGED on. Then simply go to the page you wish to edit and click on the "EDIT" link (located on the upper right hand corner of most pages). You can place your text anywhere on the box that opens. YOu can then preview or choose to save the changes immediately. You cannot do any harm here. Whatever you do can be undone (or what anyone else has done!). And, there ia history of all changes -and who did them. Just click on the Info on any given page link to see ALL previous versions. (The Info link is beside the "edit" link up above). So, play, practice, check out your friends page, etc.
4. Who has registered?
There is a Participant tab at the top (upper right hand side). You will find a list of all those who have created a wiki account. Why not go on their page and insert something? You jsut click on their wiki name to go to their page. (Your wiki page is ALWAYS on top of all wiki pages once you are logged in. So, you can easily get back to your home page.)
5. Want to know if someone has altered your page?
